Welcome to Teach Indonesian!

Teach Indonesian has been designed to showcase Indonesian language teaching resources prepared by Carmyl Winkler for Australian classrooms. These resources provide a variety of activities over the whole range of primary school age groups.

Making Indonesian Fun

Why should we try to make the serious task of learning a new language fun? Have you watched a baby turn into a toddler and almost daily learn new words and be spurred on by her parents’ acclaim and enthusiasm?

The games and activities in this book are tried and true. Most are original, some have been the excellent suggestions of other teachers. They have all been shared with primary school students and teachers over many years.

From Kancil to Kartini

This is a book of Indonesian folk tales and history, with classroom-tested activities to use in conjunction with the stories.

“Such a great idea, so beautifully done. I am wildly impressed.” – Mem Fox.

Selamat Pagi Bu (CD)

Fourteen songs sung in Indonesian by Australian children.

The songs include authentic Indonesian songs, songs with an Indonesian translation of an English song e.g. ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ and some with Indonesian words to familiar tunes used as a memory aid e.g. ‘Days of the week’ sung to the tune of ‘Three blind mice’.

A word from Carmyl

I have been an enthusiastic promoter of Indonesian language teaching for many years, initiated by two years living in Indonesia in the province of Aceh, with my husband Don. We both taught at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Don teaching English while I taught Physics.

The resources of this site have been developed in schools and used by Australian school children and their teachers, so we know they work!

“Selamat mengajar to you all!”

Carmyl Winkler.

Making Indonesian Fun

Starting with the all-important pronunciation and finishing with making videos and putting on a classroom concert, this book is full of games, activities and suggestions for ways of teaching themes including greetings, families, food, geography and clothes.

A number of ideas have been designed to challenge fast learners while being non-threatening to slower ones. Every activity in the book has been classroom-tested, often over many years.
